Bent Sørensen

Dr. Bent Sørensen is a Professor of physics at the Institute of Mathematics and Physics, and Professor Emeritus at the Department of People and Technology, both at Roskilde University, Denmark. He is also an independent consultant at Novator Advanced Technology Consulting. His research is cross-disciplinary and has resulted in nearly a thousand scientific articles and about forty books, including foundation work in economic theory (life-cycle analysis, the scenario method) and in energy research (technology and applications, renewable energy resources).

Dr. Bent is one of the world’s leading specialists in renewable energy. He has more than 5 decades of experience in researching the field, and has published hundreds of monographs, technical reports, articles in scientific journals, and conference contributions. He has received several awards and has been knighted by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe of Denmark.

He has worked at universities in France, Denmark, Japan, Australia and the United States (Yale and Berkeley), has been a consultant to governments and international organizations, a lead author in the IPCC climate assessment recipient of several international prizes and honors.

Bent Sørensen’s Renewable Energy: Physics, Engineering, Environmental Impacts, Economics and Planning, 5th Edition, continues the tradition by providing a current and thorough overview of the entire renewable energy sphere. Since its 1st edition, this standard reference source helped put renewable energy on the map of scientific agendas. Many renewable energy solutions no longer form just a marginal addition to energy supply, but have become major players, with the promise to become the backbone of an energy system suitable for life in the sustainability lane.

This eBook is a problem-solving tool for researchers, students, engineers, consultants, and planners currently working in the field, as well as a detailed map of the renewable universe for those looking to expand into new technological specialties, offering the most comprehensive coverage of the subject available.

The book has been structured around 3 parts in order to assist readers in focusing on the issues that impact them the most for a given project or question.

  • PART I covers the basic scientific principles behind all major renewable energy resources, such as solar, wind, and biomass.
  • PART II provides in-depth information about how these raw renewable sources can actually be transmitted into the grid, converted into useful forms, and stored for future utilization.
  • PART III undertakes the aspects of environmental impacts, energy planning, and socio-economic issues on regional and global levels.

This eBook:

  • Covers the underlyingengineering and physics of energy sources and conversion processes, including models, methodologies, and analysis
  • Provides a better understanding of the current progress and scientific basis in the field
  • Requires advanced knowledge of physics and maths
  • Provides a unique 3 part organization covering energy sources, conversion processes, and the related planning, environmental impacts, and socio-economic issues on regional and global levels
  • Latest edition presents updated data about current insights on climate change, renewables market penetration, the most recent available technology for renewable energy conversion, transmission and storage, and revised planning scenarios and future outlook
