Edward S. Neukrug

Dr. Edward Neukrug is a Professor of Counseling at Old Dominion University. Dr. Neukrug has made a substantial impact on the fields of counseling and human services. An author of over 11 textbooks and dozens of articles and chapters in ebooks, his works have been read by thousands of counseling and human services professionals and students. A leader in many counseling and human services associations, he has helped steer the fields toward the future. In addition, Professor Ed Neukrug was the architect of the original ethics code of the National Association of Human Services (NOHS) and served in a variety of capacities for professional associations. He has several open-access, free websites that focus on learning counseling theories, testing and assessment, understanding one's view of human nature, and more. Edward has received numerous awards for his work, including twice receiving the President's award from NOHS and recently receiving the American Counseling Association's (ACA) Fellows designation.

Distinguished by its emphasis on the development of the helper, its experiential focus, and the unique use of personal vignettes, Neukrug’s comprehensive and easy-to-understand text, Theory, Practice, and Trends in Human Services, 6th Edition (PDF) provides an overview of the field of human services. It starts with discussions of history and current issues, followed by a chapter on standards as they relate to skills, ethics, credentialing, and accreditation. The ebook later moves on to include important content areas that human service professionals must recognize and understand to be effective, including counseling theory, group and family counseling, helping skills, consultation and supervision, community organizing, cultural competence, human development, how to work with varied client populations, and research, appraisal, and assessment. The last chapter stresses on career development, including guidance about further education and understanding of how career development models can be employed to the student and the student’s clients.
